Four trainers will send out eight of the 13 runners entered in the 33rd CashCall Futurity at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Scheduled at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track, the CashCall Futurity, a Grade I for 2-year-olds with a guaranteed purse of $750,000, headlines the Saturday program. The Futurity goes as the ninth race.
Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, winner of the 1988 Futurity with King Glorious and runner-up – Fury Kapcori (2012) and Rousing Sermon (2011) – the last two renewals, will be represented Saturday by Shared Belief and Tamarando.
Owned by a partnership that includes radio and television personality Jim Rome’s Jungle Racing LLC, Alex Solis II and Hollendorfer, Shared Belief is perfect in two starts around one turn with earnings of $76,200.
The gelded son of Candy Ride and the Storm Cat mare was purchased privately after defeating maidens by seven lengths in his Oct. 19 debut at Golden Gate Fields.
In his first start for his new connections, Shared Belief won the Grade III Hollywood Prevue Nov. 10 by 7 ¾ lengths, showing impressive acceleration as he drew away in the stretch.
A California bred son of Bertrando and the Dehere mare Tamarack Bay, Tamarando is already a Grade I winner for Hollendorfer and owner-breeders Larry and Marianne Williams, capturing the Del Mar Futurity Sept. 4.
After finishing third in a pair of races at Santa Anita – including the Grade I FrontRunner Stakes – Tamarando won the Real Quiet Nov. 23 in his return to Betfair Hollywood Park. The victory was his third in seven starts and pushed his bankroll to $355,120.
If Tamarando his successful Saturday, he would become the third horse to win the Real Quiet and CashCall Futurity, joining Liaison (2011) and the recently-retired Comma to the Top (2010).
Rankhasprivileges and Sheikinator have both been supplemented for $15,000 – with an additional $15,000 to start – by trainer Ken McPeek.
Owned by McPeek’s family’s Magdalena Racing, Rankhasprivileges, a son of Einstein and the Mr. Prospector mare Scrape, has one win in two starts and earnings of $133,600.
The ridgling finished third in the Grade III Delta Jackpot Nov. 23 at Delta Downs after defeating maidens by 1 ¼ lengths Oct. 20 at Keeneland.
A son of Curlin and the Dixie Union mare Im a Dixie Girl owned by Magic City Thoroughbred Partners, Sheikinator is also 1-for-2 and has earned $35,800. He was runner-up Oct. 4 at Keeneland before winning against seven opponents at the CashCall distance Nov. 16 at Churchill Downs.
Trainer John Sadler will send out the duo of Candy Boy and Kobe’s Back for Lee and Susan Searing’s C R K Stable.
A colt by Candy Ride and the In Excess mare She’s an Eleven, Candy Ride has one win in four starts – 8 ¼ lengths over maidens in his BHP debut Nov. 22 – and earnings of $45,600.
Winner of the Willard L. Proctor Memorial Stakes in his initiation June 15, Kobe’s Back was second as the 9-10 favorite in his return in the Prevue. The gray son of Flatter and the Well Decorated mare Well has banked $80,000.
The Craig Dollase barn will be represented by Brother Soldier and Karma King.
A son of Brother Derek, who won the 2005 Futurity, and the Bertrando mare Desert Drama, Brother Soldier has one win in three starts and earnings of $37,800 for J K Racing LLC. He was third in the Prevue in his first local appearance.
Third in the Real Quiet, Karma King has banked $62,800 while winning once in three outings for J K Racing LLC, Brewer Racing Stable and Chris Ewing. He’s a son of Pure Prize and the Unbridled’s Song mare Unbridled Princess.
Fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile won by stablemate New Year’s Day, Tap It Rich will try to add to Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert’s record six CashCall Futurity wins.
Owned by Fog City Stable, the Tapit ridgling and the Mr. Prospector mare Gold Canyon has earned $88,800 in two starts. He broke his maiden by 4 ¼ lengths Oct. 12 at Santa Anita prior to the BC Juvenile.
Owner and founder of CashCall, the consumer loans company which has sponsored the Futurity since 2007, J. Paul Reddam will have two starters – Bond Holder and Electric Eddie - in the race.
A Mineshaft colt and the Conquistador Cielo mare Cielo Girl, Bond Holder has one win in six starts and earnings of $306,000. His sole victory for trainer Doug O’Neill came in the FrontRunner.
Electric Eddie is a maiden after five races for trainer Ben Cecil. Second in both the Golden State Juvenile for California breds and the Real Quiet, the Square Eddie colt out of the Gilded Time mare Electric Daze has earned $65,630.
Poker Player, who was also supplemented, switches surfaces for owners Gary and Mary West and trainer Wayne Catalano after finishing eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Nov. 1.
The gray son of Harlan’s Holiday and the Red Bullet mare Revel in the Win has won two of four and earned $145,900.
In his only race over a synthetic track, Poker Player, who was 23-1, won the Grade III Bourbon Stakes Oct. 6 – which was originally scheduled for turf - over the Polytrack at Keeneland.
Owned by trainer Myung Kwon Cho, Even Echo has failed to hit the board in six starts. The son of Street Hero, whose best finish was a fifth against maidens, is a son of Street Hero and the Stephen Got Even mare Reba Got Even mare. He has banked $2,750.
